A ripe tomato with its green calyx draping over it like a hood, standing at the end of a tomato vine

Solanum lycopersicum var. cucullata

Stay on the vine.

In 1893 the Supreme Court of the United States was asked what a tomato is. Botanically, it is a fruit. The court said vegetable — because that is how people eat it, and because vegetables were the ones that got taxed at the port.

The tomato has been filed under the wrong heading ever since. It never argued, never asked for a correction, never left. It simply stayed on the vine and let everyone else be confident.

Everyone throws tomatoes at the bad performers. Nobody asks the tomato what it saw.
